Danielle sat down with a sigh, discouraged and exhausted. The day had proven frustrating. With only forty dollars left in her wallet, she desperately needed to find a bank to cash her paycheck. She was living in a new city with no local bank of her own - and the banks were not eager to help her. For more than two weeks, she made attempt after attempt - to no avail. With her cash supply dwindling fast, she had no other resources. How could she continue to support herself and her two children? She wondered just how much longer she and her children could get by on the little money they had left.

Taking a break from her struggles, Danielle decided to attend a meeting at the local women’s resource center. The women there had been a strong source of encouragement since she fled her home in fear for her safety. Her thoughts were far away as she settled into a chair in the meeting room. Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Today, we express hope as if we can’t be sure what will really happen. We say, “I hope I’ll win that prize… I hope it won’t rain tomorrow… I hope everything works out well…”

But “hope” in the Bible is a confident and positive expectation of good. This is because as His child, your heavenly Father favours you. Because Christ is in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27), you can expect the glory of God to shine into every area of your life, including your family, job, ministry, health and finances! It is hard to believe that Gurmit Singh who plays Singapore’s most hilarious contractor, Phua Chu Kang in the popular sitcom PCK Pte Ltd, once had to save for a whole week to afford one McDonald’s Fillet O Fish.

“My father worked as a security guard and my family couldn’t afford all the nice things money could buy,” said Gurmit Singh, 41, whose real name further intrigued viewers because he played the typical kiasu Chinese, contractor, Phua Chu Kang so well that very few suspected he had a Sikh father.

Till today, he still holds his Mc Donald’s Fillet O Fish for several seconds before he eats it. Now he savours it not because he won’t be able to afford another for a long time, but because he is thankful to God for all the blessings showered upon him. Continue reading Don’t Play Play with God…
